The Courchevel Ski Resort has always been one of the top resorts in France, if not the whole of Europe and the skiing in Courchevel and the 3 Valley’s is second to none. People from all over Europe flock towards Courchevel for its quality skiing, high class restaurants, ski in and ski out chalets and après ski bars – and rightly so! As many of you may be aware, the resort of Courchevel has a few different heights and resorts within itself. At the bottom of the Valley you have Le Praz at 1300m, slightly further up the mountain you get to Courchevel 1550, then onto 1650 and finally the main ski area of Courchevel 1850.
Courchevel Ski Resort
Courchevel Ski Resort
Courchevel Ski Resort in France is one France’s best know and highest quality resorts. Sitting at 1850 metres above sea level, the altitude of Courchevel Ski Resort is one of the main attractions for the thousands of guests who visit this resort every year. Although it’s renowned as an expensive destination, Courchevel Ski Resort caters for most budgets and tastes. It is split into 4 villages, Courchevel 1850, Courchevel 1650, Courchevel 1550 and Le Praz (also known as Courchevel 1300). The skiing in Courchevel is excellent quality, given that the resort is linked to the Three Valleys, the world’s biggest fully linked ski-able area.
The Villages of Courchevel Ski Resort:
Courchevel 1850
The different villages of Courchevel Ski Resort offer something for just about everyone. The destination of choice if budget isn’t a concern is Courchevel 1850, with its luxury hotels and chalets, Michelin star restaurants and ease of access to the pistes. The nightlife in Courchevel 1850 is also some of the best in any French resort. Bars like Piggy’s, Kalico’s, Milk Bar and Bar Le Jump are renowned across the Alps, just like Les Caves de Courchevel, where parties often run almost until the lifts open the next morning!
Courchevel 1650
Courchevel 1650 is the best destination for people wanting to visit Courchevel Ski Resort, enjoy some nightlife but go home with their wallet intact! It’s a smaller village but with plenty of choice of bars, restaurants and great access to the skiing. The area above 1650 stays relatively quiet even in peak weeks and the accommodation, whilst not quite as plush as Courchevel 1850, offers very good value for money.
Courchevel 1550
The next village down the road is Courchevel 1550. It’s a much quieter destination, ideal for families and younger groups on a budget. Most accommodation in 1550 is close to the slopes and the bus service to 1850 is fast, frequent and free. There’s less nightlife here in Courchevel 1550 than other parts of the resort but the vastly reduced cost of staying here and the ease of access to the ski area more than make up for that!
Courchevel 1300 (Also known as Le Praz)
Le Praz is a wonderful alpine village that despite becoming part of one of the world’s best know ski destinations has lost none of it’s original charm and character. The village is still populated mostly by locals but does have a handful of lovely chalets which are available to book. The village has limited nightlife but the few bars and restaurants produce a really lovely atmosphere. Access to the slopes is either via the Praz Gondola to 1850 or the Foret Gondola towards La Tania.

A Brief History of Courchevel, France
Courchevel in France is one of Europe’s premier ski resorts, sitting at 1850 metres above sea level and forming part of the Three Valleys, the world’s largest fully linked ski area. Courchevel is split into 4 villages, each named after their altitudes. They are Courchevel 1850, Courchevel 1650, Courchevel 1550 and Courchevel 1300 (also known as Courchevel Le Praz).
The History of Courchevel Ski Resort
The original villages in the area were the villages of St Bon (1100m) and Le Praz (1300m). St Bon was the political centre of the locality, containing the Mairie and town hall. Towards the end of the 1930s the French government started to look for a site for a purpose built ski resort to rival those of Switzerland but the start of the war meant that the political will to complete the project was lacking. Other projects such as Meribel benefited from being privately funded and prospered, but Courchevel’s progress was somewhat slower.
In 1943 Laurent Chappis, at the time imprisoned as a POW in Austria, began thinking about his own personal project to improve the Three Valleys area, which encompassed the valleys of St Bon, Les Allues (Meribel) and Belleville (the future Les Menuires and Val Thorens valley). He planned to create three linked ski resorts, with the Tovets meadows above St Bon as the focal point for his new resort. Having secured the support of the Savoie General Council’s President of Finances, Pierre Cot, the next hurdle was securing the land to proceed with the project.
Laying the foundations
St Bon already had a small tourist industry, with the first hotel opening in the winter season in 1925 and the mayor, Francis Mugnier, persuading all but one of the local landowners to sell land to the project. On 3rd May 1946 their land was transferred to the Department of the Savoie, who immediately built an access road and began dividing the area in small plots to be sold on to private investors, with the idea that they would build according to a fixed plan. Chappis’ plans involved a social aspect, which nowadays might seem amazing given the prices of land and holidays in Courchevel 1850. He was insistent that the new resort have one area for high quality luxury hotels, one for more modestly priced hotels and one for individual chalets. All of the different areas would have equally good access to the skiing and nowadays the layout of Courchevel 1850 still reflects the manner in which Chappis divided the land. The Bellecote area, with its luxury hotels beside the piste remains the most exclusive destination, the budget hotels were in the Plantrey area (although most are now refurbished with prices to match!) with the individual chalets at Nogentil, further up the Bellecote piste.
At the heart of the resort, Chappis proposed that an area would be preserved as a beautiful alpine garden, or Jardin Alpin. The rules surrounding this area were particularly strict, with buildings not permitted to be built above the height of the trees and all residences (hotel or chalet) to be ski in, ski out. The commercial centre of the resort was below the Jardin Alpin and car parks were lower still, at the entrance to 1850, with the idea being that guests would arrive, park their cars and be transported to their accommodation by bus.
What’s in a name?
The question that still needed answering as the development got off the ground was what to name the resort? Chappis’ idea was to name it after the meadows on which they built first and call it the Plateau des Tovets but others thought a catchier name was needed. After thought, the suggestion was made to take the name of a hamlet a little further down the hill called Courchevel. The original Courchevel would be renamed Courchevel-Dessous or “Lower Courchevel” but this was predictably met with distaste by the inhabitants of the village. To them the name implied that their village was inferior and was seen as almost insulting. Finally an agreement was reached and the new resort was named Courchevel 1850 with the original village being named Courchevel 1550. One final problem, the new resort sat at 1747 metres above sea level, why 1850? The reason was down to nothing more than rivalry with the other new development along the Tarentaise Valley called Val d’Isere, which stood at 1800m!
Further expansion
By the 1960s, Courchevel 1850 was a fully established resort and although developments and refurbishments were (and still are) ongoing, the resort had become very popular. The original residents of St Bon, who had given up swathes of land to aid the development of the area, were becoming increasingly frustrated at being frozen out of the running of the resort and at missing out on the obvious benefits. They all had steady employment looking after ski lifts, servicing hotels and chalets but of the 157 families who had lived in the commune before the development, only 9 had managed to set up businesses of their own. They began to develop the village of Moriond, on the access road to Courchevel 1850, but without any overall vision from one planner (such as Chappis), the result was haphazard. Buildings sprang up along the main road, with no thought for access or parking and very little consideration given to their visual impact on the area. Even today, driving through Courchevel 1650 (as Moriond is now known), you can immediately see how this lack of foresight led to a sprawling, uncoordinated ski station. The new developments also meant that the lift system was creaking under the weight of ever more skiers.
A new way forward
In 1964 the resort of Courchevel 1850 and the council of St Bon called a halt to all further developments and finally agreed to come together and create a plan for the whole area. They decided that the running of the entire Courchevel area and its infrastructure, which now encompassed Courchevel 1850, Moriond (1650) and Courchevel 1550, where developments had started and a gondola to 1850 had been established, would be transferred back to the local council of St Bon. The responsibility for running the ski lifts would stay with the Department but the local families of the St Bon commune now had much more involvement in decision making and much more power over their own locality.
The resort went from strength to strength over the following decades, with the links to Meribel established and by 1973 the whole of the Three Valleys ski area had been connected. The Three Valleys became the largest fully linked ski area in the world, a record it holds to this day. Over 600kms of piste link more than 10 resorts: Courchevel 1850, Courchevel 1650, Courchevel 1550, Le Praz, La Tania, Meribel Village, Meribel, Meribel-Mottaret, St Martin de Belleville, Les Menuires and Val Thorens.
Courchevel 1850 has slowly expanded over time but it does remain quite faithful to Chappis’ original vision for the resort. Courchevel 1650 still bears the legacy of the ill advised developments of the early 60s, but has been modernised over time and these days offers a very good alternative to the high prices of Courchevel 1850. Courchevel 1550 remains a quiet village but with very quick and easy access to the amenities of 1850 and direct access to the ski area. Le Praz at 1300 metres is still a locals’ village and still houses a lot of the original families from the area. the village remains unspoilt by huge developments, but has a good number of tourist residences. St Bon, the original starting point of the entire project remains undeveloped and almost exclusively houses locals. To this day, Courchevel politics take place in this traditional Savoyard village.

Catered chalets in Courchevel
Catered ski chalets, hotels or self catering?
When it comes to finding the right accommodation that best matches your group’s needs in Courchevel, there are many different options so it can be difficult to choose the right one. How do you decide whether to go for a hotel, a self-catering apartment or a catered ski chalet? Hotels may offer you the flexibility of arriving and departing on whichever day you choose, as well as having concierge facilities along with swimming pools and gyms, but they don’t work so well for large groups and not all of your meals may be included. Self catering apartments can be great if you drive and do your food shopping for the week in one of the hypermarkets at the bottom of the mountain. However they are often a false economy as by the time you have spent a fortune on food in the little mountain supermarket or eaten out every night, you will probably have spent far more than you ever anticipated. On balance, catered chalet holidays with flights and transfers all-in are often the most economical and by far the more convenient with everything taken care of with the minimum of fuss.
In Courchevel, there is a huge range of catered ski chalets that will suit you whatever your group size, whatever your budget and whatever level of luxury you desire. The price you pay will include the chalet plus breakfast, afternoon tea and a three or four couse evening meal with wine and so you only need to worry about paying for lunch and one evening meal during the week when the chalet hosts have a well-earned night off. This gives you the chance to sample one of Courchevel’s many restuarants with offerings from fine Michelin-starred cuisine to traditional Savoyarde specialities. On last count, Courchevel boasted 3 Michelin starred restaurants but there are a whole host of more reasonably priced restaurants offering Tartiflette, Fondu, Raclette and so on. In your chalet, the host will cook delicious food for you and will take care of any special dietary requirements, allergies etc. and of course cater for children’s tastes too.
The majority of the catered ski chalets in Courchevel come as part of a package including the flights and transfers, again making a ski chalet the very best value for money option. Booking a ski chalet package makes the whole holiday process that much easier as everything is taken care of for you, which is great if you are travelling with children or in a large group.
We have chosen some of our favourite chalets in Courchevel for your skiing holiday, but there are plenty more on our website.

Ski in, ski out in Courchevel
Ski in ski out chalets offer the absolute ultimate in ski convenience. The luxury of stepping out straight onto the piste in the morning and skiing back up to the front door in the afternoon is one that everyone should try and by avoiding long treks in ski boots and queing for ski buses the week is so much more enjoyable and hassle free. So much so in fact that many of our clients who have experienced a ski in/out chalet have never gone back!
Ski in/out benef
its everyone but particularly families with youngsters who struggle with carrying equipment and walking long distances in ski boots. Especially when you have to be at the ski school meeting point at 8.45am! Waking up, having breakfast, stepping outside, strapping in and skiing down to the lifts/ski school is a huge benefit!
Courchevel has some great options when it comes to ski in/out as you’d expect, from the great value Coq de Bruyere and Hotel Anemones (both perfect for families) to the more exclusive Perrier and Eboulis. Details of all these can be found below.
All the recommended chalets are located in Courchevel 1850 which is by far the best Courchevel village for ski in/out. Being a reasonably compact resort (in comparison with say Val d’Isere or Verbier) another great advantage of these is that they are all within easy walking distnace to the resort centre for apres activities. The Coq de Bruyere and Anemones are smack bang central with the others being a pleasant 10 minute walk or so. You do really get the best of both worlds with these!
If you’re after a ski in, ski out ski holiday, Courchevel would be tough to beat! If you’d like to give us a call to discuss in further detail, we’d be happy to help. Our team have worked seasons in Courchevel as well as many other resorts and are on hand to help organise your perfect ski in, ski out ski trip!

Family Skiing holidays in Courchevel
A perfect family friendly resort needs to tick several boxes; it needs to cater for mixed ability groups, it needs to offer plenty of family activities to do after skiing, it needs a high standard of English speaking ski schools and it needs accomodation that offers a range of childcare services. It also helps if the resort is reasonably compact with all these things easily accessible. Courchevel ticks each of these boxes emphatically!
Courchevel is an outstanding choice for family ski trips. Jam-packed with cruisey wide blue runs (particularly 1650) but also with plenty to offer for beginners and experts, every level of skier is thoroughly spoilt for choice.
There’s also plenty to keep the whole family amused off the slopes with tobogganing, ice skating, ice climbing and bowling! Courchevel 1850 has the ever popular ‘Le Forum’ which houses shops and restaurants together with a whole host of activities including an indoor climbing wall.
Another great family selling point is the quality of the English speaking ski schools. Courchevel rivals any resort in the world when it comes to this aspect of your family ski trip. Schools I’ve used myself in the past include ‘Magic in Motion’ and ‘New Generation’. Both offer lessons for every level either on an individual or group basis. Their instructors are usually English and are, in my experience, fantastic teachers and great company on the hill. In addition, Courchevel also has the ‘ESF’ in both 1650 and 1850, arguably the leading ski school in the Alps.
Courchevel has an impressive array of chalets that offer in-house childcare. The pick of these is probably the Dahu; a chalet style hotel in the centre of 1850 that has a creche and kids’ club. The full service includes being escorted to and from ski school, supervised meals, plenty of activities and babysitting in the evenings if needed. The kids are not only well looked after by the fully qualified English nannies but have a great time too! Such a highly professional and personable childcare service really does provide peace of mind which can drastically improve the standard of your holiday in my personal opinion. If you’re after a smaller chalet for sole use offering childcare, the Sylvie in 1550 and the Veronique in 1300 are two of the best examples. Both offer highly personalised and flexible childcare to fit around each families needs.
All in all, Courchevel really can offer everything needed for the perfect family ski trip! I’ve put together a few chalet ideas below that would best suit families with younger children, most of which offer childcare.
If you’d like to give us a call to discuss in further detail, we’d be happy to help. Our team have worked seasons in Courchevel as well as many other resorts and are on hand to help organise your perfect family ski trip.

Chalet Veronique, Courchevel 1300 – Sleeps 11

For value…
Chalet Hotel Chanrossa, Courchevel 1550 – Sleeps 40
With adult prices starting at just £229 for the 2010/11 season, the Chanrossa is stunning value. The location within 1550 is superb – 150m from the main lift station and foot of the slopes and close to the centre of the village. The hotel is more comfortable than luxurious but the food is great and you’ll be well looked after. 1550 is a quieter, more traditional (not to mention cheaper) alternative to 1850 and for a great value family ski trip, the Chanrossa is a strong option. A comprehensive child care service is offered at the Chanrossa too!
